Bartlesville High School
The swim teams at Bartlesville High School are always contenders. Individuals like Luke Olsen compete at a high level and help create a culture of winning within the program. Olsen, now a junior, will compete in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, and the 400 Free Relay. One team goal this year involves a relay team.
“My goal for the team is to break the 800 Freestyle Relay record come March. Personally, I want to drop time in my sprint events,” said Olsen.
For nearly a decade Olsen has competed in competitive swim and he is proud to represent the Bruins in competition.
“Swimming is one of the highest performing sports at Bartlesville. Winning every home meet and hopefully state (for our girls’ team), makes it feel like I’m bringing a trophy back to the school, like I’m contributing something that will boost the name of our school forever,” said Olsen.
Olsen said he’s excited to see what the girls team can accomplish this season while the boys team continues to make progress and prepare for the state competition.
“When you’re committed to a sport, your closest friends are your teammates. Simply put, nine days out of ten one of them either makes me laugh or keeps me on track,” said Olsen. “The team is bigger than it’s ever been before. A bigger team means more accountability and more potential for mistakes, but we’re homing in on February, when our girls will win state. The team has been preparing for it all year, now all that’s left is a few days of racing.”
Swimming is not the only activity Olsen is involved in. He is the bassist for Bartlesville’s Symphonic Orchestra, and he loves to write.
“I would love to be a writer, maybe a professor at a college. My dream is to be an author,” said Olsen. “When I have the energy, I write every chance I get.”
It’s no surprise that his favorite subject in school is connected to his passion for writing.
“Even though it’s my last hour and my mind is already fried, English with Mr. Vance has got to be my favorite class,” said Olsen.
