Bartlesville High School wide receiver Matthew Sears is focused on turning lessons from last fall into momentum for a stronger season with the Bruins. The junior playmaker values the bond he shares with his teammates as much as any highlight-reel catch on Friday nights.
“What I love most about my team is how close everyone is. We push each other every day and always have each other’s backs, on and off the field,” Sears said. That chemistry shows up in summer workouts, where Bartlesville has been laying the groundwork for the upcoming year. “Summer workouts have been going great. Everyone has been working hard, and spring ball showed that we’re becoming more disciplined, more physical, and better as a team.”
Sears lines up at wide receiver and embraces the responsibility that comes with being a key part of the Bruins’ offense. “I play wide receiver; I enjoy it so much because I like making big plays to help my team out,” he said. He sees his ability to create extra yards as a defining part of his game. “One of my strengths in my game is making people miss and turn a little gain into a bigger gain. One of the main things I’m trying to improve on is my catch in traffic and my catching in general.”
Last season, Bartlesville faced its share of adversity, but Sears said the experience reshaped his mindset. “Last season taught me that adversity can make you better if you respond the right way. We didn’t have the season we wanted, but it motivated me to work harder and do everything I can to help our team improve this year.” That drive extends beyond football; Sears also competes on the basketball court, sharpening his athleticism and competitiveness in another sport.
Sears credits former teammate Adrian Jones for pushing him to raise his standards. “A teammate that left an impression on me is Adrian Jones, he’s made me a better player and a harder worker,” Sears said. He also points to his parents as the foundation of his motivation. “The people who inspires me the most is my parents because they’ve always supported me and encouraged me to keep working hard no matter what.” Looking ahead, Sears plans to continue his football journey after graduation. “When I graduate, I plan on going to college and playing football.”
