Bartlesville High School sophomore Abbriella Flores understands that a setter’s role reaches beyond placing the ball in the right spot.
As a varsity volleyball player, Flores embraces the responsibility of directing the offense while working to be a steady, positive presence for her teammates. The pressure that comes with the position has also helped shape her approach to the game.
“I am a setter and the most difficult thing about my position is the pressure of knowing that it is my job to lead my team on the court,” Flores said.
That responsibility is easier to carry within a team culture Flores appreciates. She said the encouragement she receives from teammates is one of the most meaningful parts of being involved with the program.
“I love how supportive and encouraging my teammates are,” Flores said.
Flores has found examples of leadership throughout the roster. She pointed to teammate Lyndee as someone whose character and court presence have made a lasting impact.
“My teammate Lyndee has left an impression on me because shes a great leader on the court and is sweet to everyone on our team,” Flores said.
She also recognized Avea as a teammate who brings energy and encouragement whether the team is competing or away from the court.
“The most vocal teammate of mine is Avea. Shes uplifting on and off the court,” Flores said.
Flores’ connection to volleyball began with her older sister, whose support continues to motivate her development.
“My older sister inspires because she introduced me to volleyball and has encouraged me to be the best player I can be,” Flores said.
A lesson from last season continues to guide Flores as she moves forward with the Bruins. Rather than dwelling on setbacks, she sees them as chances to improve individually and collectively.
“A lesson I learned from my last season is that every loss is an opportunity for growth,” Flores said.
Flores said she takes offensive feedback well and is focused on improving her defensive game. Outside volleyball, she is a member of Bartlesville’s symphonic orchestra, where she plays cello. After high school, she hopes to attend veterinary school.
