Bartlesville High School’s Johnny Colmenero
Bartlesville High School senior Johnny Colmenero has embraced the challenges of tennis doubles while growing into a leadership role for his team. Colmenero, a team captain, said the sport has helped him learn how to manage emotions, stay steady under pressure and support younger players in the program.
One of Colmenero’s favorite memories came during his junior season, when he said the experience of competing alongside his friends helped build strong bonds and lasting memories. That sense of connection has remained important to him as he has continued his career and taken on more responsibility as a senior leader.
“As a team captain this year my role should be to keep everyone accountable and always support in anyway I can and be a good role model to them since they are freshmen,” Colmenero said.
Colmenero said tennis has taught him lessons that reach far beyond competition. He said the sport demands emotional control, especially in intense matches when frustration, excitement and stress can all show up at once. Learning to remain composed has made him a better athlete and person.
He also credits the people around him for helping shape his journey. Colmenero said his mother has been his biggest inspiration because of the support she has given him through every high and low, both on and off the court. He also gave thanks to his coaches for standing by him throughout his career.
“The best advice someone has given me is, ‘In order to succeed you need to fail,’ and failing is a part of the process to succeed,” Colmenero said.
Colmenero also said a former teammate, Will, left a lasting impression on him by helping him realize how much he truly loves tennis. He added that representing Bartlesville means showing that students can bring pride to their school in athletics as well as academics. Inspired by pro star Carlos Alcaraz, Colmenero continues to push himself while setting the standard for those who follow.
