Senior Adrianne Flick, and junior Sami Sheaffer are valuable leaders for the Bartlesville Lady Bruins. They took the time to answer questions about themselves and their team.
VYPE: What is the most important thing you do to prepare for basketball season?
Adrianne: You have to be in the weight room lifting and conditioning, you have to be getting shots up, and you definitely have to be aware of what you are eating so you start the season off on the right foot.
Sami: The most important thing I do to prepare for basketball season is train, take care of my body, and eat well.
VYPE: What position do you play and what about that position do you like most?
Adrianne: I play post or the 5 position, and I love the physicality of it. Even though we may not get the ball as much, it is so fun to be physical and to know that you are doing your job in helping your team get open shots and second chance opportunities from your rebounds.
Sami: I play the 2 spot and 3 spot. I like these positions because they give me the opportunity to shoot, drive and run the floor.
VYPE: What lessons has basketball taught you that you use in your daily life?
Adrianne: My coach showed us a video my freshman year and the main point was to handle hard better. This has helped me grow mentally and to know that even if something is hard that I can handle it.
Sami: Basketball has taught me that to be better I have to work hard even when I don’t feel like working hard, even in things that I do not enjoy doing.
VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?
Adrianne: This ties back to what basketball taught me. Handle hard better. Essentially just be mentally ready for something difficult to come your way because your life will not always be easy. You have to be able to handle it without breaking.
Sami: The best advice I have been given would be to give 110 percent no matter what, even if you’re not being given 110 percent back.
VYPE: What is your favorite part about being on a team?
Adrianne: My favorite part of being on a team is the family that you gain from the girls on the team and the coaches.
Sami: Seeing my teammates every day and getting to play with my friends.
VYPE: Who inspires you and why?
Adrianne: The main people would be my parents because they do so much and they balance it all so well, and they have taught me to do the same.
Sami: My parents inspire me because they work hard every day, and they are kind to others all the time.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
Adrianne: Karlee Lajoyce. I played with her all the way from seventh grade to my sophomore year. She was so encouraging and helped me with playing post but most of all she helped me to be more optimistic and to grow mentally.
Sami: Kennedy Nubel, a senior this year. She shows up ready to work hard every day and is a great leader.
VYPE: What is your favorite part about representing your high school as an athlete?
Adrianne: To win while wearing the colors and the name. It is a great feeling, and the best part is definitely when our stands are full at a home game and the student section is hype and we win. It feels amazing.
Sami: The support from everyone and the love they have for me.
VYPE: What has been your favorite memory and/or accomplishment of playing?
Adrianne: My biggest accomplishment is going from barely playing JV my sophomore year, to starting varsity my junior year. It was a lot of change in a little amount of time.
Sami: My best memories would be building relationships with everyone and making life-long friendships.
VYPE Q: Tell me about other interests or hobbies you love.
Adrianne: I love to read and to be creative (drawing, painting, graphic design, etc.) and I love to just spend time outside.
Sami: I love to hunt, fish and cliff jump with my friends.
