August marks the start of a new school year and the month several fall sports, including softball, get their seasons underway. For student-athletes like Maddie Czaja of Bartlesville High School, August marks another opportunity for her to play the sport she loves, while representing her school in competition.

Czaja started playing softball at a very young age, which is common for players at the varsity level.

“I started playing softball when I was six. I knew this was the sport for me when me and my two best friends were on the same team,” said Czaja.

In early workouts and practice, Czaja said the team has looked good and she is excited to see what they can accomplish on the field this season.
“Some positives I see on the team this year is a lot of hard workers. I’m excited to get to play with everyone and work on everything throughout my junior year,” she said.

Softball has become the focus for Czaja. Making good grades and playing to her full potential dominant her schedule. As a student-athlete at BHS, Czaja said it’s a great environment for students and there is always someone to help or answer questions.

“I don’t play any other sports anymore, I used to play tennis my 8th and 9th grade year but decided to focus on softball. Bartlesville is a great environment for student-athletes because as busy as we are with games, practices, and tournaments our coaches and teachers help us stay on task when needed,” said Czaja.

As the centerfielder for the Lady Bruins, Czaja must cover a lot of ground, which means she must be on the same page with her teammates. It’s one aspect of the position she enjoys. Helping her team win is a great feeling, but Czaja and her teammates have big goals for this season.

“The thing I enjoy most about center field is being able to lead and communicate with my teammates. My dream scenario for the season would be going to state for fast pitch. I was so proud when we went to state for slow-pitch, and we have the talent to do so in fast pitch this season,” said Czaja.

The ultimate goal for Czaja is attending college and pursuing a degree to become a Chiropractor or a Manual Therapist. Until then, Czaja is focused on this season and helping her team compete through a tough schedule.
