Bartlesville High School senior Mikayla Bastings values far more than the competition that comes with volleyball. For Bastings, the sport has become a place to build lasting connections, develop resilience and contribute to something larger than herself.
“I enjoy being a member of the team because I enjoy the sport and the friendships I’ve made over the years.”
That sense of community has helped make Bastings’ high school experience meaningful. Volleyball requires communication, trust and a willingness to support teammates through difficult stretches, whether in practice or during a close match. Bastings sees the relationships formed through the sport as one of its greatest rewards.
Away from the court, she enjoys spending time with the people closest to her. Her interests provide a balance to the commitment and energy required of a student-athlete.
“In my free time, I hangout with my friends, go shopping, or spend time with my family.”
As a senior, Bastings is carrying forward lessons that extend beyond athletics. The demands of competition can bring adversity, but she believes those moments create opportunities to grow. Maintaining perspective and continuing to work are principles she expects to use long after her time at Bartlesville.
“Athletics have taught me that to never give up, even when things are hard or get down. Always have a positive attitude.”
Bastings’ outlook reflects the value of perseverance in sports and in everyday life. Whether she is supporting a teammate, facing a challenging moment or enjoying time with friends and family, she approaches each experience with an appreciation for connection and a positive attitude. Her senior season gives her another opportunity to enjoy the game and the friendships that have shaped her journey.
